Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jars & Other Mason Jar Crafts

    Craft Tutorials, Crafting, Sponsored

If you love mason jar crafts, you are going to love this transformation.

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

It is so, so easy to turn a regular Ball brand jar into a mirrored mason jar!

All you need is a can of Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint, the same stuff I used to make my faux mercury glass mirror.

You can see I went a little spray crazy!

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

But you know how much I love my mason jars.

Mason Jar Craft Videos: Bloggers Share their Favorite Mason Jar Crafts

This week, I’m teaming up with the Ball brand and a group of bloggers to share our favorite mason jar crafts in a series of  Google+ video hangouts.

Click play for instructions on how to make your own mirrored or mercury glass mason jars.

I told you it was easy!

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

I just love the new spring green Mason jars from the Ball Heritage Collection, celebrating the company’s 100th anniversary.

But I’m not sure anything can replace that heritage blue mason jars in my heart…

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

    Except maybe this mirrored version.

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

Then, the clear glass jars also look amazing when sprayed with the Looking Glass spray paint.

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

If you want to get really fancy, you can create a mercury glass mason jar by spraying a couple coats of the paint inside, then spritzing lightly with vinegar. The vinegar will remove some of the paint. When it dries, apply a few more coats of paint inside the jar to get the mottled mercury glass look that you see above.

Mirrored Mercury Glass Mason Jar Crafts

You can use the lids that come with your jars, but I found some daisy jar lids and some flower frog jar lids at my local Target store in the dollar section!

A few things to keep in mind when working with Krylon Looking Glass spray paint:

    • Apply the paint on the inside of your jar in light coats.
    • Always spray paint outside.
    • The paint dries quickly; you only have to wait about a minute between coats.
    • Once jars have been painted, they are NOT FOOD SAFE! So, DO NOT serve beverages or food out of them. Just use them decoratively.
    • Don’t use any liquid inside the painted jars as it might react with the paint and remove it. Do not use water in them, as I mentioned in the video. It doesn’t immediately remove the paint, but after a while, it does. If you want to use them as vases, insert a plastic cup inside them to protect the finish.

I have a feeling I’m going to be making a bunch of these!

Thanks for your video. I plan on trying some of these for an outdoor party. Could you tell me how long ago you purchased the daisy and flower frog lids from Target?

Good luck with your mason jars. Be sure to use a vase or plastic cup inside the jars if you’re using them for vases. I edited the video to reflect that they’re not waterproof, but wanted to be sure you’re ware of that. And I found the flower frog lids in the Dollar Spot at Target several months ago. I was only able to find one of the frog lids, and they’ve been sold out locally ever since. However, since them I have found similar lids at Michael’s and JoAnn’s. They’re not exactly the same; you use them with the rings that come with your mason jar. But the effect is the same. They came 2 to a package at Michael’s. The bran dis Ashland, and they’re called Mason Jar Accessories. At JoAnn’s, they’re called Transform Mason and come 4 to a pack (I think). The ones at JoAnn’s have a star cutout on the top, or you can get the daisy drink lid version. Not sure if they have the frogs there or not. But Michael’s definitely does, and I just saw them last week.

Love these! I tried to do the mirrored jars over the weekend and the spray paint dried and looks all scaly. Am I doing something wrong? I am using wide mouth pint jars so I can glue a 1/2 pint jar on the inside for a flower vase. Thanks for any input! I am looking forward to trying more crafts and fun stuff I find here!

Hmm… I’m stumped. Were you using new jars? Is it possible that they had some residual moisture or oil on the inside of the jar?

I also did lots of thin, light coats on my jars. I actually painted most of mine over a period of several days. I just had them in my garage and whenever I’d walk by, I would spray a coat of the Looking Glass spray paint inside, being sure to roll the jar to coat the sides. Then, I put my jars upside down so any extra paint could drain out.

I do know that if you get any moisture on the jars after spraying them, the paint will flake away. Do you think that happened? Or maybe you were working outside on a particularly humid day? I bet that could have an impact. It gets so muggy here in the summer that I bet the moisture in the air could condense inside the jars and cause the paint to flake or scale during the drying process.

I love these!! And you are adorable. I second the lack of use of chemicals. I used to wear a perfume called Sunflowers in high school. I could never wear it again after frog dissection in Biology because it always reminded me of formaldehyde.
